Primary Stars utilises the appeal of professional football clubs to engage primary school pupils to create healthier more positive lifestyles through the power of sport. Swansea City Community Trust deliver Premier League Primary Stars in all counties across South West Wales, to all primary pupils from Foundation Phase to Key Stage 2.
The programme attempts to develop the whole child by looking to improve their physical literacy, classroom engagement and developing important life skills. The programme also supports primary school teachers by developing their PE knowledge and delivery by working alongside one of our experienced area coordinators.
- High quality PE
As an organisation we strive to deliver the highest quality of physical education in our partner schools. We endeavour for all pupils to have a positive PE experience by providing them with fun inclusive sessions linked to the national curriculum.
Not only do we see an improvement in pupils’ physical development but also their social skills, tactical understanding and technical abilities. Additionally, all of our sessions promote many core values that sport has to offer: teamwork, resilience, problem solving, leadership and fair play.
All sessions are delivered by our highly qualified area coordinators, who have vast knowledge throughout the teaching and coaching spectrum. Through their involvement in PE and sport they have developed the ability to engage and motivate a wide range of ages and abilities.
- Classroom engagement
We utilise the appeal of sport, football and Swansea City AFC to inspire and motivate children to become more passionate about numeracy and literacy. Using a range of football themed resources, we aim to develop pupils’ knowledge and understanding of a variety key concepts highlighted in the national curriculum.
All of our classroom resources have been developed alongside current primary school teachers using a range of delivery methods to cater for every pupil’s learning needs. To further spark pupil’s passion for their academic studies, we run and advertise a number classroom themed competitions with many sporting prizes to be won.
- Teacher mentoring
Our highly experienced area coordinators are appropriately trained to work alongside primary school teachers and provide mentoring opportunities and advice throughout our sessions. We offer ongoing support and guidance to teachers with the aim of increasing their confidence and competence when delivering PE lessons in the future.
Each of our partner schools has the opportunity to receive a bespoke whole staff CPD workshop covering all aspects of primary school PE. In addition to this, staff are offered the chance to attend ‘The FA Primary Teachers Award’ which introduces teaching fundamental movement skills and small sided games in sport. The award is delivered by a former primary school teacher and current FA tutor.
The programme is available to schools and pupils of all ages across South West Wales. It can be broken down into different time periods to suit every school’s needs, ranging from half a term to a full academic year.
