Late Goals | The Season So Far

16th November
First team

Any supporter will tell you that watching Swansea City puts you through the emotional wringer on a weekly basis, but this season has provided some incredible moments of elation and disappointment already.

In just 19 games in all competitions, fixtures involving the Swans have seen 11 goals scored in the 80th minute or later as late drama has been followed by more late drama.

Here we run down the dramatic finishes that have gone for and against the Swans so far this season.

Swansea City 3 Northampton 1

Carabao Cup – Tuesday, August 13

Late goals: Andre Ayew 80, 88, George Byers 83

Andre Ayew

Swansea City looked to be on the verge of a Carabao Cup upset as they trailed League Two Northampton at the Liberty in the first round, but the introduction of Andre Ayew changed all that.

Ayew – making his first Swansea appearance since May 2018 – made an immediate impact as his initial shot was blocked, but he followed up the looping ball to beat Dai Cornell with a header and level the scores.

It was all Swansea and they took the lead as Declan John’s surging run out of defence created room for George Byers, whose curling effort bounced under Cornell’s despairing dive to find the far corner.

Ayew then made sure of the win, nodding in from close range after BenWilmot had challenged at the far post.

QPR 1 Swansea City 3

Championship – Wednesday, August 21

Late goal: Sam Surridge 80

Sam Surridge

Sam Surridge converted an Andre Ayew cross to ensure Swansea City held off a determined QPR fightback to maintain their unbeaten start to life under Steve Cooper.

Playing at a venue where they had been blown away the previous season, the Swans made a bright start and took a deserved lead when Ayew teed up Bersant Celina for the opener.

Jordan Hugill headed the Rs level in the second half, but a Borja Baston penalty – won by substitute Jordon Garrick – restored the lead.

The hosts sought an equaliser, but Ayew produced another wonderful assist as he fired in a cross for Surridge to head in his first Swans goal in front of the travelling support.

Leeds United 0 Swansea City 1

Championship – Saturday, August 31

Late goal: Wayne Routledge 90

Wayne Routledge

Wayne Routledge grabbed a 90th minute winner to give Swansea City a first victory at Elland Road in 70 years and extend their unbeaten start to life under Steve Cooper.

Substitute Routledge swept home a deflected Matt Grimes cross via the inside of the post to send the Swans top of the Championship table.

The visitors had needed to soak up plenty of pressure but an outstanding defensive display ensured a third clean sheet of the season.

The game looked to be heading to a goalless conclusion, but a superb challenge from Joe Rodon saw Swansea retain possession after a corner was half-cleared and Routledge did the rest.

Swansea City 0 Nottingham Forest 1

Championship – Saturday, September 14

Late goal: Alfa Semedo 85

Nottingham Forest Alfa Semedo

Swansea City were the victims of a late goal for the first time in 2019-20 as Alfa Semedo’s late strike saw Nottingham Forest end their unbeaten start to the season.

The Forest substitute finished at the far post with five minutes remaining, after Lewis Grabban had done superbly to make the most of a Swansea error by driving forward from his own half to set up his colleague.

Grabban had earlier hit the bar, and Samba Sow had seen an effort blocked as the Reds created the better attacking openings.

Swansea’s best effort had seen Andre Ayew’s header strike the base of the post but it was not to be for Steve Cooper’s side.

Swansea City 1 Reading 1

Championship – Saturday, September 28

Late goal: Andy Yiadom 90

Reading Andy Yiadom

Andy Yiadom rifled in a last-gasp equaliser to earn Reading a point and prevent Swansea City going back to the top of the Championship table.

Borja Baston had coolly guided Andre Ayew’s cross into the far corner of the net to give the hosts the dream start.

They had chances to extend their lead but also had to be wary of a Royals side who were more than happy to press bodies forward when the chance arose.

And the visitors got their reward for a positive second-half display when Yiadom fired an angled drive into the far corner of net in the final minute of normal time.

Swansea City 1 Stoke City 2

Championship – Saturday, October 5

Late goal: Scott Hogan 90

Stoke Scott Hogan

There was more Liberty Stadium frustration for the Swans as they were unable to build on a perfect start in defeat to Stoke.

Steve Cooper’s side had led inside a minute as Andre Ayew netted from a parried Yan Dhanda shot, and they had a number of chances to extend that advantage over the opening 20 minutes.

But they were pegged back when Sam Clucas volleyed home after Joe Allen’s surge into the Swansea area.

And Stoke went on to snatch their first win of the season when substitute Scott Hogan tapped in from close range in the final minute, after Freddie Woodman had made a superb save to keep out a header.

Wigan Athletic 1 Swansea City 2

Championship – Saturday, November 2

Late goal: Sam Surridge 90+2

Wigan Sam Surridge

Sam Surridge struck a stoppage-time winner as Swansea City snatched victory at the DW Stadium.

The substitute met Connor Roberts’ cross perfectly to give the Swans all three points and send the 500 travelling Jacks into joyous celebration.

Nathan Dyer’s first away league goal since May 2014 had given the Swans reward for a bright start as his left-footed effort found the net.

But Wigan were soon level as Kieffer Moore calmly finished from the spot after Mike van der Hoorn had fouled Chey Dunkley.

Both sides had their chances to find a winner, with some excellent covering defending seeing the Swans avert danger on a few occasions, but it was the visitors who took the spoils in a dramatic conclusion to an entertaining content.

Sheffield Wednesday 2 Swansea City 2

Championship – Saturday, November 9

Late goals: Morgan Fox 90+1, Ben Wilmot 90+4

Sheffield Wednesday Ben Wilmot

Ben Wilmot snatched a point for Swansea City as they kept their unbeaten away record intact in a dramatic finish at Hillsborough.

Andre Ayew’s close-range finish for his sixth goal of the season had given the Swans a 32nd-minute lead in South Yorkshire.

They looked on course for just a second victory in 15 league trips to face Sheffield Wednesday, but were pegged back with 10 minutes to go as Fernando Forestieri finished from inside the six-yard box.

And they looked set to end up with nothing to show for their efforts as Morgan Fox slammed home in stoppage time after the Swans had been unable to deal with a corner.

But with a heartbreaking defeat in prospect, up popped Wilmot to find the bottom corner in front of the 700 travelling Jacks who had made the journey to South Yorkshire.
