Local disability charity benefits from SwansAid

The Swans Community Trust have continued to back organisations that support children with disabilities by presenting a SwansAid grant of £10,000 to The Play and Leisure Opportunity Library.

After treating a group of the library’s participants to a stadium tour with club ambassador Lee Trundle, the Community Trust made the latest SwansAid presentation that takes the total amount donated to over £130,000 since its inception in 2013.

Based in Swansea, The Play and Leisure Opportunity Library were awarded the grant after impressing the SwansAid panel with their dedication to supporting both children and adults with disabilities and increasing their opportunities to partake is physical activity.

“We provide specialist toys and equipment to children and adults with a disability in a lending library service,” explained Judy Lynch, the library’s project leader. “We offer therapeutic play sessions for children with a disability.

"We offer a specialist home visiting service for children with a disability and their families who are struggling to cope with a particular issue."

Stocking over 500 items in their library – that can be borrowed by members for a month at a time – the SwansAid grant will help the charity purchase more specialist and sensory equipment to encourage movement and physical activity.

Through the purchase of such equipment, it is their aim to support positive skill acquisition in their members, which will help to regulate their sensory system to achieve functional movement and empower the children to participate in more sport.

“It feels absolutely amazing to be awarded the grant,” added Judy. “We cannot thank the Community Trust enough. To be supported in this way is fantastic.

“We will be able to offer a unique service to our members and a service that meets the profound and multiple needs of our members.

“The grant will benefit our members by providing a unique opportunity for them to reach their potential and develop skills through activity.

"They will be able to receive specialist advice and practical strategies to help their loved ones overcome the barriers to their disability."

SwansAid applications are currently closed but will reopen this autumn, so stay tuned for updates.
