Participants from a trio of Community Trust projects this weekend travelled to Stoke to take on their counterparts from Stoke City’s Community Trust in an array of sports.

Nearly 50 young people from our Premier League Kicks, Premier League Girls and Inclusion projects made the trip to compete against Stoke on the same day the Swans took on the Potters in the Premier League as part of a ‘Fixture Within A Fixture’.

Held at the Sir Stanley Matthews Sports Centre, the Fixture Within A Fixture saw the projects’ participants take part in games of football, basketball and table tennis before heading to the bet365 Stadium.

With victories for our PL Girls team and our table tennis players from the PL Kicks Multi-Sport project, plus a draw for our inclusive football team, the event was a huge success.

Ian Owen, the Community Trust’s sport participation manager, said: “The trip was a great way to reward the young people who attend our community schemes on a weekly basis.

“The opportunity for these youngsters to wear the shirt and represent the club in this way is fantastic and I would like to thank everyone involved for their impeccable behaviour and the respect shown to our staff.”

Craig Richards, our sport participation co-ordinator, echoed Owen, saying: “We were delighted to reward participants with the opportunity to represent Swansea City in their chosen sport, whilst also being able to watch the first team in action.

“It was fantastic to see so many young participants supporting each other and mixing together to help the community cohesion.”

And it wasn’t just the coaches who savoured the event.

Hannah Thomas, who attends our PL Girls sessions in Morriston, said: “I really enjoyed travelling to Stoke with the Premier League Girls programme.

“It was a really good experience to play against Stoke and even better to get the win.

“Premier League Girls gives so many young female footballers such great opportunities and I’m glad to be a part of it.

“I hope to go on another trip like this soon and gain more experience from playing against other teams.”

The Fixture Within A Fixture partnership with Stoke will also see the Swans host a return fixture between the two community trusts on the last day of the 2017-18 season.

“We hope that everyone involved felt they had an experience to remember and we look forward to welcoming Stoke to Swansea next year,” Richards added.
