England Under-21 international Grimes joined Swansea City from Exeter City in January 2015, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal.
The midfielder arrived at the Liberty for an undisclosed fee after the Swans beat off competition from a number of Premier League clubs to secure the services of Grimes, who had plenty of admirers with his performances in an Exeter shirt.
Grimes broke into the Grecians’ first team as a teenager, making his debut back in August 2013.
He was named Exeter’s player of the season in his debut campaign playing first-team football then, after impressing again in the first half of 2014-15, Grimes made the move to Wales.
He has had to be patient since crossing the Severn Bridge, although he did make three Premier League appearances at the tail-end of the 2014-15 season.
After three more Swans appearances in the early months of 2015-16, Grimes joined Blackburn on loan for the second half of the campaign and played 13 times for the Ewood Park club.
In 2016-17, he joined Leeds United on a season-long loan, but made only 12 appearances during a frustrating year in Yorkshire.
Another loan followed as he spent the 2017-18 campaign with Northampton Town. It proved a successful one for Grimes, who scored four goals in 44 league appearances, though the Cobblers were relegated to the fourth tier.
