Alfie Mawson experienced penalty shootout heartache with England Under-21s as they missed out on the European Championship final after defeat to Germany.

Mawson played the full game as the Young Lions were beaten 4-3 on spotkicks after the game had ended 2-2.

Leicester City’s Demarai Gray had levelled for England following Davie Selke’s opener, while Aidy Boothroyd’s were in front thanks to Tammy Abraham’s tap-in.

Felix Platte’s header then took the game into extra-time, with Germany holding their nerve in the shootout.

It proved a successful tournament for Mawson, who featured in every game for the U21s while he also scored in the opening 2-1 win over Slovakia.
