Aimee Deacon | We stuck together as a team

Swansea City Women forward Aimee Deacon praised her side’s patience and togetherness after they battled to a 1-0 victory over Aberystwyth Town at Park Avenue.

Deacon’s first goal of the season proved decisive in west Wales, with the striker winning and converting a penalty shortly before half-time to secure all three points for Yzzy Taylor’s side.

The Swans were made to work hard against a well-organised Aberystwyth side, with clear-cut opportunities at a premium throughout the contest.

But Deacon was pleased with the way Swansea adapted to the challenge and showed their defensive resilience to see out the victory.

“Aberystwyth is always a tough place to come. They are a physical team and, with the conditions as well, we knew it was going to be difficult, but we all dug in, stuck together as a team and I thought it was a really solid performance from us," she said.

“We had to be patient. We knew they would have a strong defensive block, so we had to make sure we stuck to the game plan. We fought until the end to see out the game and thankfully got the win.

“We could have put away a few more of the chances we had to make the scoreline a bit more comfortable, but they were threatening on the break and we had to be aware of that throughout the game.

“We defended really well as a team, which is something we’ve done throughout pre-season and into the start of the league campaign. Everyone works hard for each other and I think we showed that again to get the clean sheet and the three points."

The Swans’ number nine scored 17 goals in all competitions last season and, having opened her account against the Seasiders, Deacon hopes it will be the start of another successful campaign in front of goal.

“It was important for me to get a goal early in the season. I think it sets me up nicely for the rest of the campaign, so hopefully it will give me confidence and I can find a few more goals over the coming weeks," she added.

“It’s been a good start for us with two big wins. It’s important that we keep taking things one game at a time and hopefully we can continue building momentum as the weeks go on.

“I think Cardiff Met will provide a similar challenge next week where we’ll have to be patient and find ways to break them down.

“But we know we have the quality in this squad and, if we keep performing like we have been, hopefully we can put in another strong performance and come away with another three points.”
