Anthony Wright | The boys showed their quality
Coach Anthony Wright praised the individual and collective qualities shown by Swansea City Under-21s as they returned to winning ways with a 5-0 victory over Colchester United on Good Friday.
The Swans were two goals up within the first seven minutes thanks to goals from Josh Pescatore and Caleb Demery.
Thomas Woodward got a brace to ensure a 4-0 lead at the break for the hosts, before Josiah Kallicharan got the fifth deep into the second half.
Swansea had been unlucky to suffer defeat earlier in the week, as Barnsley came from 2-0 down to clinch a 94th-minute winner to claim the three points at the Joma High Performance Centre.
But they responded in emphatic fashion, much to Wright's satisfaction.
"I thought it was a really dominant performance from the players. We started the game on the front foot, pressed well, and really suffocated the opposition. In possession, we were composed and controlled, that led to us creating a lot of chances, especially in the first half," said Wright.
"The goals were really pleasing—different types, but all well worked and well timed. Pescy [Josh Pescatore] was excellent again, getting a goal and an assist, which takes him to 35 goal involvements this season. That’s a fantastic return and shows the level he’s performing at right now.
"Woody [Thomas Woodward] took his goals really well—an excellent header and then a brilliant solo finish. And it was great to see Caleb get on the scoresheet as well with a very good technical finish.
"At half-time, we had to make a couple of changes, bringing on Milo Robinson and Aimar Govea. I was really pleased with Milo in particular—he showed some excellent technical quality and a good understanding of his role.
"We also planned to bring Tom Searle on, which was nice to do as he’s been out injured, and Billy Clarke, who came off, had done very well against a tricky opponent.
"Overall, I’d say it was a much more complete performance. The average age of the group is only 18, but you could see the connections and the work from the training ground coming through. We looked more fluent, we scored five goals, and we kept a clean sheet, so there’s a lot to be pleased with."
