Club Connections | Southampton
As Swansea City get set to lock horns with Southampton on Tuesday night, we look back at some of the players who have represented both clubs over the years.
Michael Obafemi
Michael Obafemi burst onto the scene at Southampton, becoming the club’s second-youngest Premier League player when he made his debut against Tottenham in January 2018, aged 17 years and 199 days.
The Republic of Ireland international scored his first senior goal against Huddersfield Town later that year, but opportunities proved limited at St Mary’s. After loan spells with Millwall and Swansea, he made the move to the Swans permanent in 2021.
Obafemi enjoyed his most productive spell at Swansea, scoring 12 goals in 51 league appearances. His standout moment came in the 2021-22 campaign, when he struck 12 times in all competitions and formed a dangerous partnership with Joel Piroe, with two of those goals coming in the 4-0 win at Cardiff that sealed the first south Wales derby double.
Garry Monk
Garry Monk was a key figure in Swansea City’s remarkable rise from the lower leagues to the Premier League, joining the club in 2004 and eventually becoming captain. His leadership and consistency made him a hugely popular figure at the club.
After making just 11 appearances for Southampton, Monk enjoyed loan spells with Torquay United, Stockport County, Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley before establishing himself at Swansea.
He played an important role as the Swans climbed into the Championship and then secured promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 2011. Monk started the memorable play-off final victory over Reading at Wembley and made a key block to snuff out the Royals second-half comeback.
Two years later, he featured in another historic Wembley occasion, coming off the bench in the 2013 League Cup final as Swansea swept aside Bradford City 5-0 to claim the first major trophy in the club’s history, and he would be the manager when Swansea finished eighth in the Premier League in 2015 as they completd league doubles over Arsenal and Manchester United.
Ryan Manning
Ryan Manning arrived at Swansea in 2020 after making his name with QPR, bringing energy and versatility to the Swans’ midfield and defence. He quickly became a regular during a period when Swansea were pushing for promotion back to the Premier League.
The Republic of Ireland international spent three seasons in south Wales, making more than 100 appearances and helping Swansea reach the Championship play-offs in successive campaigns.
Manning departed in 2023 when his contract expired and made the switch to Southampton. He immediately became a regular for the Saints, helping them win promotion back to the Premier League during his first season at the club.
Nathan Dyer
Nathan Dyer made his name at Southampton, coming through the club’s academy before making his senior debut in 2005. The winger quickly earned a reputation for his pace and direct style.
After loan spells elsewhere, Dyer joined Swansea City permanently in 2009 and became an important part of the side that won promotion to the Premier League in 2011.
He went on to make nearly 350 appearances for the Swans, scoring 38 goals. Dyer was also on target in the 2013 League Cup final, scoring twice as Swansea thrashed Bradford City 5-0 at Wembley.
