Jay Fulton | To lead the side and get a win was a proud moment

Jay Fulton was a proud man after the midfielder took the captain's armband for Swansea City's dominant 3-0 win at Derby County on Saturday.

Club stalwart Fulton has enjoyed a strong start to the new campaign, and led the side at Pride Park with Ben Cabango missing due to a heel injury.

Fulton has been with the Swans for 12-and-a-half years and made over 320 appearances and, while he has previously skippered the side, he could not hide his delight at being part of an exemplary away showing.

Goals from Joseph Opoku, Jisung Eom and Ronald secured the spoils on a day when the Swans took control from the first whistle and did not relinquish it.

“I don’t think away games come much better than that,” he said.

“We started the game well, we scored at a good time and took control.

“It was a complete team performance.

“I have been at the club for a long time now and to captain the side is always a proud moment.

“I know I am not from Swansea, but I very much feel like I am. As a family we love it here and our kids were born here.

“So, I was proud to have the opportunity and glad we could produce a performance as a group.”

Fulton also praised the depth and competition in the Swansea squad, with the players coming into the starting line-up and those arriving from the bench making an impact.

The Scot has been part of some strong groups in his time in Swans colours, and he feels the current number of options available to head coach Vitor Matos are reason for encouragement early in the new season.

“We’ve had a good start, we’ve had two away games and won them both,” he added.

“You look at the squad, the players we have for coming off the bench and pushing to get into the team.

“It means it’s hard to get into the starting line-up, and you see the impact the players are making from the bench. All five lads who came on here made an impact and that’s great to see.”
