Jon Beale | Maintaining high standards for 90 minutes was really pleasing
Swansea City Under-18s' coach Jon Beale was delighted with the standards his side maintained throughout the full 90 minutes during their 12-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers in the Professional Development League Cup.
A hat-trick from Kai Rhodes, braces from Bobby Lewis and Josiah Kallicharan, and further goals from Callum Jones, Carter Heywood, Alex Godfrey and Harvey Gray - along with an own goal - saw the Swans progress to the semi-finals of the competition in emphatic style.
It marks another strong run in a tournament where this age group reached the final two years ago, with several members of the squad also making the Under-17s' final last season.
The Swans stormed into a 6-0 lead by half-time and, while many sides might have eased off with the result effectively secured, Beale’s team showed real ruthlessness to add a further six goals after the break and complete a memorable performance.
Beale was particularly impressed with the way his side applied themselves throughout the contest, sustaining such a high level of intensity and performance, while also praising the impact made by several of the younger players involved.
“We’re really pleased with the performance. I think the most positive aspect was how the boys applied themselves for the full 90 minutes," he said.
“When a game goes the way this one did and you have such a commanding lead at half-time, it can be easy to take your foot off the gas. But the way the boys maintained those standards into the second half - and scored another six goals as a result - was really pleasing.
“There was a good mix of goals, with some well-worked team moves and some excellent individual moments. Again, that comes from applying ourselves for the full 90 minutes, which puts us in those positions to create chances and score goals.
“It’s always pleasing to see multiple players contributing to our attacking outlet..
“What’s also really encouraging is that we had a few under-16s involved today, and the way they performed was very positive for us.
“We’ve given ourselves a great opportunity by reaching the semi-finals, and it’s a game we’ll look forward to and prepare for as we normally do - but we’ll be giving everything we can to try and reach another final.”
