Meet the opposition | Norwich City
As Swansea City get set to lock horns with Norwich City, we take a closer look at the Canaries.
What’s their story?
Norwich are in their fifth season back in the Championship. With six separate stints in the Premier League since its inception in the 1992-93 season, the club achieved its highest-ever position in the same year with a third-place finish.
Falling to the third tier in 2009 for the first time in nearly 50 years, the Canaries clinched successive promotions under Paul Lambert, narrowly edging the Swans in the hunt for automatic promotion in 2010-11.
Relegation in 2015 was followed by the club bouncing straight back up at the first time of asking thanks to play-off success under manager Alex Neil, but they dropped back into the second tier for a record-equalling fourth time in 2016, before continuing to rise and fall over subsequent seasons.
Their most notable honours are two League Cup victories in 1962 and 1985, whilst they became the first English club to beat Bayern Munich at the Olympic Stadium during their 1993-94 UEFA Cup campaign, with Wales international Jeremy Goss among the goalscorers in that famous success.
How’s their form?
The Canaries have made a steady start to the Championship season picking up nine points from their opening eight matches.
They currently sit 17th in the league standings, winning three and losing five of their fixtures. They recently reached the third round of the Carabao Cup before eventually being defeated by Manchester City last month.
Who’s the gaffer?
Philippe Clement was appointed Norwich City head coach in November 2025, signing a deal until 2029.
The Belgian has enjoyed a successful managerial career in his homeland, guiding both Genk and Club Brugge to Belgian Pro League titles.
Clement then took his coaching career abroad, managing French side Monaco before moving to Rangers in 2023. During his time in Scotland, he led Rangers to the Scottish League Cup, adding another major honour to his managerial record.
A former Belgium international, Clement won 38 caps during his playing career and represented his country at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. The former defender also spent a season with Coventry City before returning to Belgium, where he made more than 300 appearances for Club Brugge.
Who’s the captain?
Norwich captain Kenny McLean has been a key figure at Carrow Road since joining the Canaries from Aberdeen in January 2018.
After initially returning to Scotland on loan, the midfielder made his Norwich debut in August 2018 and helped the club win the Championship title that season.
The Scotland international has since passed 300 appearances for Norwich, reaching the landmark against Leeds United in the FA Cup in March 2026. He was named the club’s Player of the Season in 2023-24 and took on the captaincy permanently following Grant Hanley’s departure in January 2025.
McLean signed a new two-year contract in May 2026 and was also part of Scotland’s World Cup squad this summer alongside current Swansea striker Ross Stewart.
Who are the key men?
One of Norwich City’s key attacking threats, Mohamed Touré has made a flying start to the new campaign after an impressive opening spell at Carrow Road.
Touré joined Norwich from Danish side Randers in January 2026, having previously made his professional breakthrough with Adelaide United before spells in France and Denmark. The Guinea-born forward moved to Australia as a child and became Adelaide’s second-youngest debutant at 15 years and 320 days old.
A full Australia international, Touré made his senior debut against England in October 2023 and made an immediate impact at Carrow Road, scoring 10 goals in his first 12 appearances for the Canaries.
The forward has continued that form this season, finding the net six times in nine appearances across all competitions.
Another key figure in Norwich’s attack is Mathias Kvistgaarden, who has quickly established himself as an important part of the Canaries’ forward line.
Kvistgaarden joined Norwich from Danish side Brøndby IF in July 2025, having come through the club’s academy and made his senior debut in 2020. He helped Brøndby win the Danish Superliga title in 2020-21 before developing into one of the league’s leading forwards.
Kvistgaarden scored 23 goals in 38 appearances during the 2024-25 campaign, earning a place in the Danish Superliga Team of the Season and making his Denmark debut in June 2025.
After scoring six goals in 40 appearances during his first season at Carrow Road, Kvistgaarden has found the net twice in five games so far this term.
