Morgan Whittaker plays behind closed doors

Morgan Whittaker is set to feature in the Swansea City squad for Saturday’s Championship fixture against Birmingham City at the Swansea.com Stadium.

It will be the first time the forward has featured in a matchday squad since returning from his successful loan spell at Plymouth Argyle.

Martin acknowledged January had been a challenging period for the 22-year-old following his recall and links with moves away from SA1.

But he has been impressed with Whittaker's efforts in training, and feels the forward is eager to take the opportunity to help the Swans as they challenge for a play-off spot.

“Morgan’s been working really well and he’ll be in the squad for Birmingham," Martin confirmed.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for Morgs. He’s been great since he’s come back, it’s been a difficult situation for him.

“I think he’s dealt with it really well, he’s come to see us and he’s said that he’s glad it’s behind us now and he’s getting ready to knuckle down and make an impact on the team.

“He has outstanding attributes and now it’s up to us to bring the best out of him.”

Martin also confirmed that Liam Walsh – who played his first minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly last week following an Achilles injury sustained in pre-season – isn’t ready to be included in the squad, and Joe Allen will miss out with a minor injury.

“Joe Allen will miss this one he’s picked up a knock in training, nothing serious he’ll be back soon,” he explained.

“Walshy is playing on Friday night (with the under-21s) so he won’t be involved."
