Swansea City Under-23s secured a point away at Exeter City in their opening Premier League Cup fixture.

The Swans travelled to face an experienced Exeter side in their first competitive fixture of the season, with many of the home side’s squad having previously represented the first team.

They had taken the lead at St James Park through a fine solo effort from Dylan Morgan, but the Grecians quickly levelled through Callum Rowe.

Both sides had chances to snatch a winner, but it ended all-square.

Exeter had controlled the early proceedings of the contest, with Jacob Jones clearing a header off the line from Cheick Diabate just seven minutes in.

But the Swans defence held strong and they began to grow into the game, with the pace of Jones and Adrian Akande on the flanks causing the home defence trouble.

And it would be Swansea who took the lead. Morgan’s excellent trickery carved an opening for himself, before his curling effort flew past Harry Lee in the Exeter goal.

But the home side would be level just six minutes later through former Aston Villa midfielder Rowe. He cut in from the right-hand side before firing a low shot off the inside of the post and in.

Exeter had the chance to take the lead just after the break, James Dodd slid the ball across to Sonny Cox but he dragged his effort wide.

Morgan also came close to restoring the lead for Swansea and doubling his tally, this time firing a free-kick just wide of the post.

Exeter almost broke the Swansea hearts with just five minutes to go, Dodd’s free kick headed just inches over the crossbar.

Morgan had one more chance for a winner, but he couldn’t get a strong enough connection on a fantastic chipped ball from Sam Leverett.

The under-23s are next in action on Monday as they travel to face Hull City in their opening Professional Development League game of the season.
