Richards proud of International Cup campaign

25th March

Gary Richards admitted he was left disappointed but proud as Swansea City Under-23s lost out against Porto B in the semi-final of the Premier League International Cup at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

A second half goal from on loan Brazilian striker Wenderson Galeno separated the two sides, despite some good opportunities from the young Swans side.

The result ends the U23s debut campaign in the international competition which has seen the development squad beat Feyenoord, Chelsea and Hertha Berlin enroute to the last four.

“We are disappointed not to get to the final,” Richards said. “But we have to be proud of what we have achieved in this competition this season.

“To lose at the semi-final stage is very disappointing, but Porto are a very good side who play their football in the second tier of the Portuguese league system against professional sides.

“Them playing men’s football every week was the difference for me. They are a very impressive team and we have nothing to be ashamed off.

“Both sides created chances throughout the game, but the pleasing aspect from today is that we were in the game until the very end.

“Playing in this competition has been a great experience and we are very proud of the results we have earned against some top European teams.

“Our young players have definitely learnt a lot from this tournament and we hope to be involved again next season for a chance to go one step further.”
