Head coach Russell Martin believes the appointment of Matt Gill as his assistant will bring valuable continuity to Swansea City ahead of the 2022-23 season.

Gill has been named as assistant head coach, stepping up from the position of technical development coach, having fulfilled those responsibilities over the concluding months of the 2021-22 campaign.

The former Peterborough, Bristol Rovers and Norwich City midfielder joined the club at the time of Martin’s arrival in August 2021, having previously played alongside the ex-Scotland defender with the Canaries and briefly worked alongside him at MK Dons.

And the Swans boss is delighted the pair will continue to work together closely as they build towards a second season in Swansea colours.

“Matt has got a brilliant relationship with the staff and the players,” said Martin.

“He challenges me, he is honest and always questioning where we can improve and get better. He is very good at his job.

“He deserves the chance to step up full-time as he has done brilliantly since stepping into the role. I think you can see our performances and the way we do things has really improved since then.

“I have been really pleased with how the dynamic has worked, and I think the continuity is important for us and the players.

“It’s a really good fit, he has taken on a lot of responsibility and made a really positive contribution.”
