Taite Trivett | We need to learn from our mistakes
Taite Trivett says Swansea City Women must cut out the small mistakes that are costing them after falling to a 3-1 defeat against Cardiff City Women.
Trivett opened the scoring in the South Wales derby with a superb long-range finish from 35 yards out, netting her first goal of the season.
Cardiff would net an equaliser just before half-time, as a Kate Oakley cross was turned into the Swans' net by captain Jess Williams for an own goal.
Noah Bushby's side then took the lead 20 minutes from time, after Haile Richards was brought down by Swans defender Eilish Mitchell inside the area. Richards stepped up to convert the resulting penalty and put Cardiff ahead for the first time in the contest.
Cardiff captain Shannon Evans rounded off the scoring, rising highest to guide a Ffion Price corner past goalkeeper Amelia Forkings.
Despite the scoreline, it was a competitive contest throughout, and Trivett believes the Swans can take plenty from their performance. However, she feels they must learn to cut out the errors that can prove decisive against the league's top sides.
“I think in the first half we went out and worked the ball well. We gave it everything that we could have. I think things went against us throughout the game, but it's one of those games where we've got to learn from our mistakes," she said.
“It's frustrating, obviously, because we were ahead for a long period of time. Conceding a goal in the first half isn't ideal, but we went in, I think, pretty even at half-time.
“We wanted to come out in the second half and give everything we could again, and obviously, conceding a penalty makes things difficult.
“It was two set-pieces that we've conceded from. It was a physical battle, as it always is against Cardiff, but I think as long as we rectify our mistakes, we look on to next week and we'll be all right.
“I think we kept the ball well and moved it well. We played in a slightly different formation last week and this week, which shows the versatility we have as a group.
“We're moving forward with it, and we've got confidence in moving the ball around. I just think we've got to rectify the mistakes we're making, and we should move forward from there.”
Trivett welcomed her first goal of the season but was disappointed it couldn't contribute to a positive result.
“It was good to open my account for the season. I just saw that the keeper was off her line and I had a bit of space, so I thought I'd hit it," she added.
“I didn't expect it, really, but it was nice for it to go in the back of the net. Obviously, it's about the performance on the day, and unfortunately, we didn't capitalise on that and get the three points.”
The Swans will turn their attention to cup competition next week as they host Barry Town United at the ThermaGlaze Ground in the Genero Adran Trophy.
Trivett believes reaching last season's Welsh Cup final will provide motivation to go one step further this campaign, while highlighting the quality within the squad to compete for silverware.
“We suffered heartbreak in the Welsh Cup final last year, so it's exciting for the knockout competitions to be back and to have another chance of getting all the way and winning some silverware," she concluded.
“We know as a squad that we are capable of winning a trophy this season, so hopefully we can get the result on Sunday to lead us towards that.”
