Toshack hails U23s’ learning opportunity

12th September

Coach Cameron Toshack believes Swansea City’s Under-23s can use Monday’s Premier League 2 victory over Derby as a valuable learning experience.

First-teamers Wilfried Bony, Luciano Narsingh and Kristoffer Nordfeldt lined up alongside the young Swans as they stormed to a 5-2 victory at the Liberty Stadium to earn their debut win in division 1.

The experience of Bony and Narsingh proved fruitful with the pair on the score sheet in the first half while an Oli McBurnie brace and a late strike from substitute Kenji Gorre rounded off a fine display.

“It is great for our young players to have the opportunity to play alongside experienced professionals,” said Toshack.

“The attitude of the senior players that dropped in was top class. Players like Wilfried Bony and Luciano Narsingh move the ball quicker and demand more from the game which helped us raise our level.

“We wanted to put a performance in at home and I feel we delivered that and were pleased to get our first win in division 1.

“Last night’s result was the right response. There is still plenty to work on but we wanted a positive performance to bounce back from our defeat against West Ham.”

The Under-23s next face Tottenham at Lamax Stadium on Monday, September 18 (7pm).
