Young Swans face Welsh derby in Checkatrade Trophy

13th July

Swansea City Under-21s will face Newport County, Cheltenham Town and Forest Green Rovers in the 2017-18 Checkatrade Trophy.

The young Swans will meet Newport for a second successive season in the competition after being placed in Group E.

Goals from Botti Biabi and Alex Samuel helped Swansea record a 2-1 victory against the League Two side at Rodney Parade in October 2016.

Swansea are one of 16 Category One Academy teams to feature in the competition against clubs from League One and Two.

The under-21s will play all three group fixtures away from home, with clubs being awarded three points for a win and one for a draw. In the event of a draw after 90 minutes, a penalty shootout will be held with the winning team earning an additional point.

Last season, the Swans progressed to the quarter-final stage of the competition before a penalty shootout defeat against Coventry City, who went on to lift the title.
