Yzzy Taylor | We showed our character in abundance

Swansea City Women head coach Yzzy Taylor praised the character of her side after they came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over Cardiff Met and maintain their perfect start to the Genero Adran Premier season.

The Swans found themselves behind for the first time this campaign when Lily Moralee-Hughes gave the Archers an early lead at the ThermaGlaze Ground.

However, Taylor’s side responded just two minutes later when a Lauren Davies delivery deflected off Charley May Prouse and into the net, before second-half headers from Jess Williams and Caitlin Seaborne secured all three points.

The result leaves the Swans joint-top of the Genero Adran Premier standings, with Taylor’s side, The New Saints and Wrexham all on maximum points after three games.

For Taylor, the manner of the victory was particularly pleasing, with her side responding strongly to going behind before producing an impressive second-half performance.

“It was a good performance.

“To go a goal behind early on, when the game opened up, put us in a different situation to what we’ve been in before. To respond so quickly was really positive for us, but to then come out in the second half and perform like we did was superb." She said.

“We talk about the character that we show as a group, which I think we showed in abundance today. Cardiff Met came here and were organised, which we expected from them, but it took us a little while to work out where we could have success and exploit certain areas.

“I think at half-time we could have been ahead in the game, but credit to Cardiff Met because they were resilient as well. We had to work for it today, but it’s great for us to come away with three points.”

The Swans created a number of opportunities either side of the break, with Williams eventually putting the hosts ahead six minutes into the second half when she powered home Davies’ free-kick.

Seaborne then added a third with her first goal in Swansea colours, while Davies played an important role in both second-half goals with two excellent deliveries into the area.

“We scored some good goals and created some good chances. For us, it’s about how we create those opportunities, which I thought we showed today.

“It’s another 3-1 scoreline, like when we last played here, so we’re really happy.

“Lozza [Lauren Davies] was superb today with her deliveries and we have goalscorers all over the pitch. I was really pleased for Seabs [Caitlin Seaborne] and Jess [Williams], who both took their chances really well with two great goals.”

Despite being delighted with the start her side have made, Taylor insists there remains plenty for the group to work on as they look to continue building momentum.

“We’ll go back and look at the goal we conceded and the areas where they caused us problems because we want to learn from that, particularly with a big week coming up now.

“We have a lot of games left to play, so we have to continue working hard and keep building on the momentum we have, but we’re over the moon with how the group are doing at the moment.

“Confidence is really high for us at the moment.” 

The Swans now turn their attention to next weekend’s meeting with The New Saints, who have also enjoyed a strong start to the campaign, recording a 2-0 opening-day victory over Cardiff Met before emphatic 9-1 and 7-0 wins over Barry Town United and Aberystwyth Town respectively.

Taylor is expecting another significant test but believes her side can take plenty of confidence from their performances so far.

“We’ll put together a plan for how we want to approach next weekend.

“TNS have been on a great run and you can see that from the results they’ve had. We know they have threats that we’ll need to nullify, so we’ll take the things we’ve been doing well into next weekend and make sure we’re as prepared as possible for the game.”
