Tarrelle Whittaker

Swansea City Under-21s had to settle for a point as goals from Josh Thomas and Tarrelle Whittaker weren't enough to see off Peterborough in a remarkable game including three second-half penalties.

In-form striker Thomas opened the scoring after a goalless first period, before Peterborough were awarded two penalties in quick succession.

Joseph Taylor was denied by Remy Mitchell for the first of them, before Charlie O’Connell made no mistake with his own effort from 12 yards.

Tarrelle Whittaker converted from the spot to get his second goal in as many games to restore Swansea’s lead.

However, Taylor would have the last word as he scored Peterborough’s equaliser 15 minutes from time.

First-team squad members Cameron Congreve and Brandon Cooper featured for the academy side as they come in for Filip Lissah and Ben Blythe.

The first chance of the afternoon went the way of Thomas as he got on the end of a Congreve ball, but his shot was blocked by William Blackmore.

Posh then caught the visitors on the counter following a corner kick, Taylor advanced into the area but fired his effort wide of the far post.

A chipped ball over the top then found Thomas through on goal, but the Wales Under-21 international could not convert.

The young Swans looked comfortable and were dominant in possession. Wonderful play from Kyrell Wilson and Joel Cotterill saw the duo set up Ben Lloyd on the left flank, but the midfielder’s cross was blocked.

Moments later, Lloyd went close to breaking the deadlock as he cut inside onto his right-foot and sent a low-driven effort just wide of the target.

The hosts responded and should have ended the half in front. Kellan Hickinson played a crafty one-two with Taylor only to see his shot cannon off the crossbar.

Josh Thomas

After that let-off, the visitors got off to fine start in the second half. Thomas, who had come close numerous times in the first half, found the back of the net as he tapped in Whittaker’s low cross.

The hosts almost responded instantly, Lewis Darlington was brought down in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Taylor stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Mitchell produced a fine save to deny him and keep the Swans ahead.

However, Posh were soon awarded yet another penalty on the hour mark for a Swans handball in the box. Skipper O'Connell stepped up to level the scores.

But the Swans would regain the lead when yet another spot-kick was awarded. Thomas was shoved over as he chased a cross in the box, and Whittaker tucked away the resulting penalty.

Peterborough piled on the pressure and were rewarded with an equaliser as Hickinson found Taylor who rounded Mitchell to slot the ball into an empty net.
