Aoife Sheridan | We have enough quality to turn things around
Swansea City Women midfielder Aoife Sheridan believes the Swans have enough quality within the squad to turn their recent run of results around.
Sheridan and her teammates suffered a 3-0 defeat to Briton Ferry Llansawel at the Swansea.com Stadium on Sunday, which came on the back of a heavy loss to defending champions Wrexham.
It was a difficult afternoon for the Swans, who played with 10 players for the final 55 minutes after Caitlin Williams was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity.
Lucy Powell opened the scoring from the spot following Williams’ dismissal, before doubling her tally just before half-time.
Brooke Llewellyn added a third for Mark Murison’s side, and although the Swans continued to fight and created chances towards the end, Ferry stood firm defensively to claim a clean sheet to go with the three points.
It was Sheridan’s first start since joining the Swans in the summer, and the former Republic of Ireland Under-17 international was delighted to make her full debut in front of her parents, who travelled over on Sunday morning to watch the game.
“On the positive side, I am happy to make my first start, especially in the stadium as well. It was great to have my family there," she said.
“When I found out I was starting during the week, I knew I had to put in a performance for the team. My parents had travelled a long way over, so I wanted to put in a performance for them as well.
“I think we started really well, but the early red card changed things. The game didn't go as we had hoped, and things just didn't go our way.
“We knew at half-time that we weren't in a positive position, but we believed the quality within the group could turn it around. We tried our hardest and gave 100%, but sometimes football just doesn't swing your way.
“We take every game as it comes, and it's important now for us to learn from previous games. We will reflect this week on where we need to improve."
The Swans made a strong start to the season, winning four of their opening five games, and Sheridan believes that early form highlights the quality within the squad and gives them confidence they can turn things around.
“We had a great start to the season, which I think showed the quality and togetherness we have as a group. I have no doubt that, despite the recent run, we will be able to turn things around. We have more to give, and we will keep pushing on," she said.
Since joining the Swans at the start of September, Sheridan has been grateful for the support of her teammates and acknowledged the quality within the squad, while hoping to continue building her minutes as the season progresses.
“I have really enjoyed my time here so far. The girls have welcomed me with open arms, and, like I said previously, there is some real quality in this squad, so I knew it was going to be tough to get myself into the team.
“I have tried to focus each week on building my minutes up and doing the best that I can.”
