Swansea City has completed the signing of defender Bashir Humphreys on loan for the remainder of the 2023-24 season, subject to international clearance.

The 20-year-old joins from parent club Chelsea and will wear the number 33 shirt for the Swans.

The versatile ball-playing centre-half – who is comfortable using either foot – provides additional options to head coach Michael Duff on the left side of his defence.

Humphreys moves to the Swansea.com Stadium on the back of a pre-season where he has been heavily utilised by new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, featuring in five friendlies in the United States for the Blues.

He started Chelsea’s Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon in midweek, and was an unused substitute in their Premier League fixtures against West Ham and Luton Town.

An England age-grade international, Humphreys joined Chelsea at under-15 level, having previously had a spell in the youth ranks at Reading.

Progressing through the age categories at Stamford Bridge, Humphreys signed his first professional contract in 2021, and made his senior debut for the Blues in an FA Cup tie against Manchester City in January 2023.

Following that appearance he joined German second-tier club SC Paderborn on loan, and impressed during his dozen league appearances.

Humphreys was part of the England Under-20s’ squad at the World Cup this summer, scoring against Uruguay in the group stage before the Three Lions knockout stage exit to Italy.

He was previously a member of the under-19 squad that won the 2022 European Championship.
