Ben Cabango continuing to be assessed ahead of Derby

Vitor Matos has confirmed Swansea City are continuing to assess the fitness of club captain Ben Cabango ahead of the trip to Derby County on Saturday afternoon. 

The Wales defender was forced off the during the second half of last week’s 0-0 draw with Sheffield United with a heel issue, and will continue to be monitored ahead of the Swans’ second away match of the season. 

“We’ve got another day to assess Ben,” said Matos. 

“We will assess him tomorrow [after training] again and let’s see."

Elsewhere, Matos confirmed new signing Stephen Eustáquio will be in contention to make his Swans debut fowling his move from FC Porto. 

The 29-year-old has signed a two-year deal, which includes the option of a further 12 months, with the Swans and will wear the number 46 shirt, adding considerable experience and pedigree to Matos’ midfield options.

“He’s fit and he’s ready to go. He seems really good physically so he’s in good shape and ready to go," added the Portuguese.

“I like a lot of things about Stephen. He brings experience and leadership, and is another play who arrives to make us stronger. 

“He offers a lot such as his playmaking. He understands the game well, he knows how to build well, allows players to get forward well and I think we needed that. It allows us to have more progression in different ways in attack, as well as offering that aggressiveness”

Gonçalo Franco remains sidelined with his ankle injury but is stepping up his recovery as he nears a return to full fitness.
