The young Swans travel to St James’ Park aiming to build on their hugely impressive 5-1 victory over Porto in the Premier League International Cup on Thursday.

Following that win, the development side head to the north-east of England on a three-match unbeaten run – having also drawn with PSV Eindhoven and beaten Sunderland during that span.

Toshack believes his side’s recent performances stand them in very good stead as they prepare to showcase their talent on one of the biggest stages in the country at St James’ Park.

Nevertheless, the under-23s coach insists that they must continue to build on their momentum.

“We’ve been really pleased with the way the players have executed the game plan and how they have performed individually and collectively,” he said.

“A lot of people deserve real credit for the victory over Porto. To beat a team of that calibre is something to be very proud of. The players showed that they’re capable of competing with the best on a given night.

“Now, we need to work hard throughout the season to try and increase the levels of consistency of all of them. That is always the challenge for the boys. We know that patience is a virtue and that some players take to it quicker than others.

“But we’re in a good position at the moment and we’re looking forward to tomorrow night, when the boys will have another good opportunity to show what they’ve learnt.

“For them, it really is a premium game at a stadium that is iconic in the British game.

“It will be a really special opportunity for them and they’re all excited about it.”
