Swansea City Women’s interim head coach Chris Church felt the team showed great character to return to winning ways following their 3-1 victory over Pontypridd United Women.

Goals in the space of two minutes from skipper Katy Hosford and Robyn Pinder gave the Swans a two-goal lead going into the break.

Pontypridd pulled one back through a stunning strike by Nadia Lawrence, but a late goal by Nieve Jenkins sealed all three points for the Swans.

Church praised the character Swansea showed and felt that their first-half performance gave them a great platform in the game after a challenging week.

“It was everything we asked for in the first half, we asked for a reaction and we got it,” said Church, who was in charge after head coach Ceri Phillips left his role by mutual consent earlier in the week.

“In the second half the opposition came out, they put pressure on us and we dealt with it.

“They got one back but we scored again, and I think that’s the sign of a great team, that character to get it done in the second half.

“All the players, not just on the bench but the ones not here as well, they can all add to this squad. It’s not just about the 16 that are here.

“For the team to show that character after the last seven days, I think it shows a massive abundance of character in that dressing room, and I hope we can really push on now.

“Having Stacey [John-Davis] back adds another dimension to our attacking play, she can create something out of nothing.

“It’s a big week, we’re going to speak about the upcoming game this week and look at where we can improve.

“I don’t think we were far away last time, we just lacked that clinical edge and Cardiff Met were just a bit better in that area.

“Looking at today, I know we have the players in there to put that result right.”
