Swansea City’s Connor Roberts hopes Wales’ young guns can help Ryan Giggs’ men get their Euro 2020 campaign off to a winning start against Slovakia.

Full-back Roberts is one of three Swans in the national squad, along with Daniel James and Declan John, and the trio have been among a number of younger players to make their mark on the international stage for the Dragons over the last 18 months.

Should he be involved at Cardiff City Stadium, he will make his first competitive appearance for his country and Roberts is looking forward to Sunday’s crunch encounter.

“Every time I get the chance to play for Wales is an unbelievable feeling,” he said.

“We have a lot of talented young players and we want to do well for our country.

“I can remember watching Wales at Euro 2016 and it would be great if we can get Wales on to that stage again.”

And Roberts admits it is a boost to have his Swansea City team-mates alongside him on international duty, with James and John also hopeful of being involved in the opening qualifier.

“It is great to have Daniel (James) and Declan (John) in the squad as well. We learn and keep improving as individuals,” he added.

“Dan is a close friend of mine. This Wales squad has a lot of young players who have played alongside myself and Dan.

“He is not alone in the squad. We all know each other, we are all mates. We have a good friendship off the pitch.

“It is good to see Dan and Declan in the squad. Hopefully we can all get some game time. We want to play football whether it is for Swansea or Wales.”
