Dan Sheehan | Every player had a positive impact on the game

Swansea City Women assistant manager Dan Sheehan praised the impact of his entire squad following their 5-0 pre-season victory over Penybont.

The Swans maintained their perfect pre-season record at the DragonBet Stadium, with Chloe Chivers opening the scoring in the first half before Lauren Davies, Ellie Lake, Caitlin Seaborne and Emily Richards all found the net after the break.

It also marked a fifth consecutive clean sheet for the Swans, who limited the hosts to very few opportunities throughout the contest.

Sheehan was particularly pleased with the way his side took control of proceedings and stepped up their intensity following the interval.

“I think for the first 10 or 20 minutes we were really strong. We had a bit of a lull, but I think that was because Penybont backed off and forced us to control the tempo. I thought in the second half we were excellent.

“The change in weather at half-time could have made it more difficult, but as soon as the whistle went we were aggressive, we were on the front foot and we created lots of chances. Every player had a positive impact on the game.

“It’s always nice to see different players score and it’s good to see us score different kinds of goals. We could have scored a few more if we had been a bit more clinical, but as a whole it was really positive.

“We spoke about controlling the game and being ruthless, and I think the girls did that really well.

“For me, if we can put the ball into good areas then we have players with more than enough quality to score goals. I think sometimes it’s good to step back and look at the simplicity of doing the basics well, and hopefully it’s a sign of things to come this season as well.

“The key is sticking to the principles and doing the right things, while not taking our opponents for granted. There was definitely stuff that we could tidy up on today, but I think the overall structure was really good and the personnel really took on their roles and adapted when needed.”

With pre-season now complete, attention turns to next weekend's Genero Adran Premier opener against Cardiff City, which will also mark the Swans' first competitive fixture at their new home at the ThermaGlaze Ground.

Sheehan is excited by the prospect of beginning the campaign with a south Wales derby and hopes the occasion can help the Swans build a strong connection with the local community at their new home.

“What more could you ask for?" Sheehan said.

“If you love football, a home game against your local rivals is something to look forward to, and we want to put on a great showing for ourselves.

“It’s our first game at Garden Village, which is really exciting. We trained down there in the week and I think the girls felt a really positive vibe from being there.

“Hopefully we can really build that community down there and get people through the doors because we have excellent players. I think they deserve that support and hopefully we can enhance and grow our fanbase in a new home.”
