On This Day: Watkin double boosts play-off hopes

Swansea City boosted their Division Three play-off hopes as Steve Watkin's double helped them sink fellow promotion hopefuls Scunthorpe United 2-1 at Glanford Park on March 23, 1999.

With John Hollins at the helm the Swans had been in and around the play-off spots for much of the season, but they faced a stern test against The Iron at a ground where they had yet to taste victory.

And the chances of doing so on this occasion took an early blow when Justin Walker fired the home side into an early lead.

But the Swans responded in fine fashion as Watkin levelled matters in the 25th minute.

And the striker snatched a dramatic late winner as he popped up with just three minutes to go to give the Swans the spoils.

Unfortunately for Hollins' men, Scunthorpe would have the last laugh as they emerged on top when the sides met again in the play-offs at the end of the season.
