Ellie Lake | Wrexham win testament to depth of squad

Ellie Lake v Wrexham

Defender Ellie Lake believes their crucial 3-2 victory over Wrexham underlined the growing strength in depth of the Swansea City Women squad.

The Swans had trailed at the Racecourse when Lili Jones fired the hosts ahead from distance, before Robyn Pinder replied from the penalty spot.

Monet Legall put the visitors in front with a stunning strike from the edge of the box, but Rosie Hughes’ header looked to have denied Swansea all three points.

But Lake popped up with a goal in stoppage time keep the Swans in the Genero Adran Premier title hunt.

The right-back had already netted against Wrexham at the Swansea.com Stadium earlier this season, and was delighted to be able to contribute to another huge win for her side.

“It’s absolutely mad,” said Lake.

“In this fixture it always seems we’ve got something going on, from drawing 3-3 in the first game of the season, to the game at our stadium and now this to this, but we’ve got three points and we are buzzing.

“This shows how good the squad is, we’ve had a couple of the younger girls come in, we’ve had Monet [Legall] back in and she’s scored so we can’t ask for more from her.

“We are pulling on everyone when we need it now, we’ve got five games in three weeks so we need everyone for those games.

“I’m really happy, I think for spells we were under the cosh a little bit, but that’s where we soak up the pressure, dig deep and show the character to get that goal. It’s testament to the whole squad.

“We will enjoy the win and then our thoughts go straight to Cardiff, it’s a massive game for us in midweek and we know we have to win it no matter what.”
