Swansea City Women's midfielder Emily Richards praised her side's resilience following their 1-0 victory over Torquay United Women in the Swans' opening pre-season fixture at the Joma High Performance Centre.

A first goal in Swansea colours from new signing Lily Deacon proved the difference between the two sides, with the midfielder showing great attacking instinct to arrive at the back post and convert from close range 10 minutes into the second half.

The afternoon was primarily about building match fitness and valuable minutes across the squad, with Taylor making regular changes throughout the contest in challenging conditions at Landore.

Despite the numerous substitutions, the Swans controlled much of the game and created further opportunities through Taite Trivett, Chloe Chivers and Lauren Davies to extend their advantage over the English side.

Richards was pleased with the way the team adapted throughout the match and believes the players showed not only resilience, but also a clear understanding of the principles and style of play they are looking to implement, regardless of the personnel on the pitch.

"It was a really good performance and a great result for the girls. I think we can take a lot of positives from the game, especially with it being our first pre-season fixture, and hopefully we can build on it as we continue our preparations.

"The conditions were tough with the heat, and there were plenty of changes throughout the game, but I think it showed the resilience we have as a team. We adapted really well, and it was also great to see the new players settle into the group so quickly.

"I was chuffed for Lily to get her first goal. It was a great finish and I think she's going to be a really important player for us this season. She's a fantastic young talent and I can't wait to see what she brings to the team.

"We've been back in training for the last three weeks and I think it's gone really well. We've worked hard with all the running, fitness testing and team-building activities like the Green Mile, while also developing our understanding of how we want to play. I think both our style of play and the characteristics we want to show as a team were on display today.

"It's a big season for us and we're all really motivated to win silverware. We know what we're capable of as a group, and we'll do everything we can to make it a successful season."
