Changes to the EFL Championship for the upcoming season

  • Play-off places have been extended. From teams finishing third to sixth last season, this coming season will see teams finishing third to eighth qualify for the play-offs.
  • The play-offs in the Championship will consist of seven fixtures, with two one-legged eliminator ties taking place before the two-legged semi-finals.

  • The eliminator games will see the fifth and eighth-place sides from the final table face each other, while the sixth and seventh place sides will also meet. The teams with the higher league placing will have home advantage for those games.

  • The two winners of the eliminator ties will progress to the semi-finals (against the teams finishing third and fourth in the table).

  • The two winning semi-finalists will meet in the Championship play-off final.
