Garrick: U23s can compete with the best

22nd October

Jordan Garrick believes victory over Chelsea proves Swansea City Under-23s can compete with the best Premier League 2 has to offer this season.

The winger was part of the side that recorded a 3-1 victory against Chelsea to secure the U23s’ second league win of the season last week.

Next up for the young Swans is a trip to Holmes Park on Monday when they take on Leicester City (7pm).

And Garrick wants them to continue their good work against the Foxes.

“Last week’s win against Chelsea was huge,” said Garrick. “That win shows we can compete in this division and challenge the big clubs.

“Every win gives us confidence - we should not fear anyone. Now we want to take it into Monday’s game and pick up more points.”

The 19-year-old, who joined Swansea from non-league Ossett Albion in 2015, has featured in seven games for the development side so far this season. And he’s keen to cement a regular place in the team.

“I’ve played a number of minutes this season,” he said. “My aim is to maintain a starting place in the side this season. But we have a big squad and there is always rotation, so I know that will be hard.

“Stepping up to the U23s from academy and non-league football has been a whole new challenge for me.

“The tempo of the game has been hard to get used to, but I have been doing a lot of work off the pitch to improve myself and I feel I am getting up to scratch.

“I am relishing every opportunity I am getting this season and want to make the most of any game time I have.”
