George Byers has handed Swansea City a boost ahead of the new season by signing a new three-year contract at the Liberty Stadium.

The midfielder has put pen to paper on terms through to June 2022, having first joined the Swans in the summer of 2016.

The 23-year-old enjoyed his breakthrough at first-team level last season, making 25 appearances and scoring three goals – against Millwall, Brentford and Rotherham - in total.

Over the second half of the season Byers was a regular starter alongside Matt Grimes at the heart of the Swans midfield, and his efforts were enough to trigger an extension for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

But that has now been superseded by the new contract, which comes into immediate effect.

Prior to his first-team selection the Essex-born midfielder played a major role as the under-23s delivered a league and cup double during the 2016-17 season, and was named the development side's player of the year the following campaign after 10 goals and nine assists.
