Jenson Seelt | I'm really excited about this opportunity
Jenson Seelt is determined to hit the ground running and make the most of his opportunity at Swansea City after joining the club on a season-long loan from Premier League side Sunderland.
The 23-year-old centre-back has linked up with Vitor Matos’ squad for the remainder of the 2026-27 campaign and could make his debut when Swansea travel to Derby County on Saturday.
Seelt becomes Swansea’s eighth summer signing, following the arrivals of Joseph Opoku, Moussa Yeo, Stephen Welsh, Tiago Parente, Elijah Just, Ross Stewart and Stephen Eustáquio.
The Dutchman will wear the number three shirt in SA1, adding further experience and competition to the Swans’ defensive options.
Seelt brings Premier League and Championship experience from his time with Sunderland, while his career has also taken him to the Eredivisie and Bundesliga with PSV Eindhoven and Wolfsburg.
And having completed his move to south Wales, he is eager to get started.
“I’m very excited to be here,” said Seelt, who has also extended his contract at his parent club.
“It took a couple of weeks to get the deal done, but I was always prepared to come here, and I’m happy it’s all done. I’m very excited for what’s ahead.
“From the first conversations I had with Ben [Stevens] and the gaffer, I was very positive about how the team wants to play and the vibe I get with Swansea City. That really excited me and I believe it’s a good step in my development.”
A key factor in Seelt’s decision was the opportunity to work under Matos, with the defender particularly attracted by the demands placed upon his centre-backs.
“I think in terms of football and how he sees the game, that was a big factor,” he admitted.
"It really excites me what he asks from defenders. It fits my playing style, my qualities, so I think it’s the perfect match.
“I think fans will see me as a ball-playing centre-back. I really like a tackle, a block and just putting my body on the line.
“Winning my defensive duels is something that’s very important to me, but I think my main strength to help the team is playing out from the back, stepping in when needed to create space and play nice passes forward and bring calmness.”
Seelt is no stranger to the Championship, having gained valuable experience with The Black Cats, and believes that knowledge should help him adapt quickly to life with the Swans.
“I think that experience helps me settle in well,” he added. "I know it’s a tough league but, at the end of the day, it’s football. It’s a case of going on the pitch and letting your intuition take over.”
His career has already taken him across different countries and footballing cultures, something he feels has helped shape him on and off the pitch.
“I think it’s helped with the human side as much as anything. Having to learn in different cultures and meet people all around the world. That really shapes you as a player and hopefully that will only help me going forward," he said.
The early signs have certainly been positive, with Seelt quickly settling into his new surroundings following his first training sessions with the Swans.
“It’s been really positive. The boys have been great with me. All the coaches, staff and everyone have given me a really good welcome," he added.
“For me, that’s great as a new player. It gives me the opportunity to just do my thing on the pitch.
“The standards were very high and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
With his move now complete, Seelt has his sights set on helping Swansea push as high up the Championship table as possible.
“The aim for me and the team is just to finish as high as we can,” he concluded. “As a club we have a lot of ambition, but I don’t think we should put too much pressure on ourselves.
“It’s just a case of getting momentum and seeing where it takes us."
