Coach Joe Roberts felt there were plenty of positives to take from the performance of a young Swansea City Under-17s squad following victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League Cup.

Caio Ifans, Bobby Lewis and Alex Godfrey were on the scoresheet for the hosts as they won an entertaining encounter against category one opposition.

The PL Cup is a brand-new competition for the age-grade side, having been invited to compete after the Swans made the final of the Professional Development League Cup last season.

And Roberts is excited by the new challenges and learning the competition can bring for the young Swans.

"It was a positive performance to start. We've told the boys about starting the competition brightly, and I thought we did that well," said Roberts.

"Across the board, we've had a great result and I thought we put in a mature performance from quite a young team.

"This competition will now add to our games programme, and obviously give the younger players who don't play with the under-18s exposure to more physical category one sides, which is brilliant.

"Playing new teams allows the boys to explore new challenges and the learning and experiences the boys can take from this tournament is massive, as individuals and as a team.

"We're pulling players from three different age-groups, our under-15s, under-16s and under-17s, and they don't get the opportunity to train or play together often.

"I think it helps culturally that the younger players get to play with scholars, we're no stranger to giving younger lads opportunities and when they boys come together it's natural to them."
