Joe Thomas insists he is more motivated than ever to progress at Swansea City after the club took up the option to extend his contract through to the summer of 2024.

The 20-year-old joined the Swans from Cambrian and Clydach during January 2022, and has enjoyed an impressive 12 months in SA1.

Thomas joined Cambrian at under-12 level, climbing all the way through the ranks and into the first team for the Cymru South outfit.

He has been a regular for the club’s under-21 side, scoring four goals this season, and Thomas is determined to build on a strong start to his Swansea career.

“I’m really buzzing, it’s always something I've been aiming for. I always knew that option was there, so it was something to work towards and I'm grateful for the opportunity," said Thomas.

“I’m very happy to stay at this club. Hopefully, now I can just push on and keep impressing, and get into that first-team environment soon.

“This has only heightened my motivation. I’ve got another year now to gain more experience, work on myself and make sure I can impress to take the next step further.

"It's been a really good week with the extension and having the chance to train with the first team, which is what all the boys want to do.

The youngster has enjoyed training with Russell Martin's team in recent weeks and hopes for more time within the senior environment in the future.

“Whether it’s just for an experience or training sessions, they’re quality players so just to be around them will always improve your game, even by just watching them," added Thomas.

“I was here for half-a-season last year, I put myself in there and was lucky to feature for the under-21s regularly.

“Since getting used to the way we play, knowing how the boys play and what the coaches want and expect, I think this season has gone well, for me.

“I could have had more goals this season, if I'm being brutally honest. I’ve had some missed chances, but there’s still plenty of time to go.

“I’m really enjoying myself this season and, at the end of the day, if you’re not enjoying yourself you’re not really going to get far.

“With such a good club like Swansea, you’ve got great staff and great players. Everyone is so kind and welcoming, it just makes you want to play for the badge more.

“Playing for Swansea is a privilege, it’s a great club to play for and no matter what, I’ll always play for the badge and for the staff who have put so much faith in me and helped me so much."
