Joseph Opoku | This was a great way to start

Joseph Opoku savoured his first goal for Swansea City after helping his new club to a 2-1 comeback win over Stoke City on the opening day of the Championship season.  

The 20-year-old, who joined the club from Zulte Waregem this summer, drew the Swans level midway through the half with a powerful effort after Eric Bocat had given the Potters an early lead.

Adam Idah then struck at the near post to complete the comeback within seconds of coming on as a second-half substitute to send the travelling supporters into raptures.

The victory ended Swansea’s wait for an opening-day league win, with the Swans achieving the feat for the first time since 2020. It was also only their third league triumph away at Stoke this century.

“I’m really happy with the win and I’m happy for the team too,” said Opoku.

“It was a great feeling. The manager always tells me to always arrive late into the box and when that moment came I just didn’t think twice.

“I really enjoyed it and I hope for more moments like that.”

Over 2,700 Swansea supporters made the long journey to the West Midlands, marking the club’s biggest away following for a league fixture since their return to the second tier.

And Opoku was delighted to round off a memorable afternoon by helping send the travelling fans home happy.

“The fans are just amazing fans, especially travelling all this way on the opening day to watch us,” he added.

“I’m really happy for them and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. We kept on going right until the end for them and we will keep on fighting together.

“We are really looking forward to next week now and hopefully we can go and win again.”
