Josh Key | Another clean sheet is really important

Josh Key saluted Swansea City’s defensive qualities after a fourth clean sheet ensured a share of the spoils against Wrexham at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The Swans battled to a fourth clean sheet in five games, boasting the best defensive record in the division as they maintained their unbeaten start to the Championship season.

Swansea created numerous openings in the tie, with Melker Widell and Moussa Yeo having some of the best chances, before Zan Vipotnik went close late on to force a save from Anthony Patterson. 

And Key was full of praise for his team-mates, who followed up the midweek win over Watford to remain top of the Championship table with 11 points from a possible 15.

“It’s nice to see we’re still top of the table, but I think we’re slightly disappointed with a point,” he said.

“We’re happy that we’ve kept another clean sheet. We know teams are going to come here and set up similar to how Wrexham played, but we defended the box well and attacked well at times. 

“If you want to do well in this league you’ve got to keep clean sheets. They are really important for us. 

"The defenders will get the credit but that’s down to the whole team. Everyone has done their job and tracked back well. 

“It’s something we've really worked on and it's showing well in games now. If we can keep getting those clean sheets, then we’re gonna do well.”

Key made his third consecutive start on Saturday night, playing a starring role at right back.

Competition for places is high, which he admits will only stand the squad in good stead moving forward, and he believes the squad will continue to grow in the early parts of the season.

“I’ve had tricky spots at the start of this season but I love this club and I love the people here,” he added. 

“I have big enough belief in my ability that I’m an exciting player to watch.

“I want to do my best for myself but also the fans. People recognise that. I always give 100 percent, sometimes it won’t be enough, but that’s something I demand from myself.

“We’ve also got a group of boys and team who believe in the same way. There is a lot of good competition here, which can only be a good thing.”

The Swans return to action in quick succession on Tuesday night when they make the trip to St Mary’s to face Southampton.

Key admits it will be another tough task for his side in a matter of days but has called on the backing of the Jack Army to get them through.

“Our away fans are some of the best,” he finished.

“We’re always hearing them and we need them again on Tuesday.

“It’s tough, these games coming thick and fast, so hopefully they can continue to shout for us and keep pushing us forward.

"We're all looking forward to the challenge."
