Ladies beat Cardiff in cup quarter-final

11th December

Swansea City Ladies booked their place in the semi-final of the Welsh Women's Premier League Cup with a 2-1 victory away to Cardiff City on Sunday, December 8.

In a keenly contested cup quarter-final at Leckwith Stadium, goals from Katy Hosford and an own goal by ex-Swan Lauren Hancock ensured the Swans went through to the semi-final of the knockout competition.

After a good first-half performance by the visitors, Ian Owen's side took the lead early on in the second-half when Katy Hosford was well placed to finish from close range after the ball rebounded off of the goalkeeper, following Sarah Adams' fierce 25-yard free-kick.

Cardiff responded well with a few dangerous counter-attacks, and, after a momentary lapse in concentration, Shanelle Edwards equalised for the home side.

But the Swans regrouped and put the Cardiff defence under a lot of pressure, towards the latter stages of the match.

They were finally rewarded for their efforts when Hancock turned the ball into her own net.

After the match, Swans Ladies manager Ian Owen was delighted with his side's show of character.

He said: "A lot of our young players came of age today. There were some great individual performances, and all the players pulled together and put in a real team performance".
