League Cup memories

13th August
First team

As Swansea City face Northampton Town in the Carabao Cup tonight, we take a look back at some memorable previous first-round encounters in the competition.

Swansea City 3 Barnet 0

August 10, 2010

Shefki Kuqi

Swansea progressed to round two of the League Cup for the fourth-consecutive year after easing past Barnet at the Liberty.

Despite Shefki Kuqi missing an early penalty, Brendan Rodgers’ side took the lead in the 24th minute as Cedric van der Gun headed home a deep cross from Albert Serran.

Darren Pratley doubled the advantage 18 minutes from time when, picking the ball up inside the centre circle, he embarked on a fine run before firing into the roof of the net.

Kuqi finally got his goal as he sealed the victory with two minutes remaining; latching onto Garry Monk’s long clearance and coolly slotting past Jake Cole.

Swansea City 3 Brighton & Hove Albion 0

August 11, 2009

Stephen Dobbie

Stephen Dobbie scored twice as Swansea made light work of Brighton in SA1.

Paulo Sousa’s side took the lead after 17 minutes at the Liberty as Garry Monk headed home from four yards after Alan Tate’s initial effort came back off the post.

Dobbie gave the Swans breathing space on the hour mark; finishing at the second attempt after Andrew Whing had blocked his header.

And the Scotsman completed his brace in the dying moments as he chipped the ball over the advancing Brighton keeper Michel Kuipers before slotting into the empty net.

Swansea City 3 Cardiff City 1

September 3, 1985

Swansea overturned a first-leg deficit to stun Cardiff 4-3 on aggregate and progress to the League Cup second round for the first time in three years.

Brian Flynn’s late strike condemned the Swans to a 2-1 defeat at Ninian Park two weeks earlier and the writing appeared to be on the wall when Mark Farrington put the Bluebirds ahead in the 40th minute of the second leg at the Vetch Field.

However, John Bond’s side responded with Colin Randell reducing the deficit on the stroke of half-time.

The midfielder levelled the tie just after the break and, in the 55th minute, Colin Pascoe completed the turnaround to send the Swans through to round two.

Swansea City 5 Newport County 0

August 15, 1978

Robbie James’ hat-trick – coupled with an Alan Curtis brace – gave Swansea a commanding 6-2 aggregate victory over Newport County at the Vetch.

Once again, the Swans found themselves looking to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg at Somerton Park.

However, John Toshack’s side came flying out of the blocks in the return fixture as James and Curtis scored within the opening seven minutes.

The pair completed their braces before half-time to put the hosts firmly in control, before James sealed his hat-trick with a penalty two minutes from time.
