Lewis confident in U23s' PL Cup potential

7th February

Joe Lewis believes Swansea City Under-23s have the potential to embark on another strong run in this season's Premier League Cup ahead of their Group E showdown with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday (7pm).

The Swans have a proud history in the competition – lifting the trophy in 2017 following a 2-0 victory over Reading, before reaching the final again 12 months later only to lose to Aston Villa on penalties.

They can take a giant stride towards qualification for the knockout stages with victory in their penultimate group game against Wolves at New Bucks Head – the home of National League North side A.F.C. Telford United.

Lewis says he and his team-mates are aiming high in this tournament and fully focused on the task in hand.

“The Premier League Cup is a good competition for us and provides another opportunity for us to build some confidence and momentum by winning games,” the 20-year-old defender said.

“Everyone in the team wants to go as far as possible in this competition and, hopefully, win it.

“We know we’ve got the potential to do it. We’re picking up in the competition and have managed to string a couple of wins together.

“Now, it’s about not looking too far ahead and focusing on trying to get the wins we need.”

The under-23s travel to Shropshire off the back of Monday’s narrow 1-0 defeat by Everton in Premier League 2.

Lewis acknowledges the Swans were made to pay for lacking that clinical edge in front of goal, but has encouraged them to make sure they take the positive aspects of their performance forward.

“We played quite well on Monday and deserved a lot more than we got,” he added.

“I think we need to be more clinical. We had more chances than them but didn’t manage to put them away, whereas they did.

“We need to keep our heads up and keep going. They’re top of the league and, if we can produce a good performance against them, we can do the same against anyone. We need to take that positivity into Friday’s game.”
