Adam King laid on the winner for Crewe as they beat Barnsley 2-1 at Oakwell in League One.
The Scottish midfielder's pinpoint cross found team-mate Lauri Dalla Valle, who chested the ball into the net with 11 minutes remaining.
King's crucial assist means Crewe, who remain bottom, are now two points from safety.
Stephen Kingsley didn't feature for Crewe as he was on international duty with Scotland Under-21s.
In League Two, Connor Roberts also provided an assist as Yeovil came from 2-0 down to claim a point at home against Dagenham & Redbridge.
The Glovers, who were without Josh Sheehan due to Wales U21s commitments, avoided swapping places with the Daggers in the dropzone following their dramatic second-half fightback.
Trailing 2-0, Roberts delivered an inviting cross which Ryan Bird nodded home from close range to cut the deficit.
And the hosts were celebrating again as defender Jakub Sokolik scored a bizarre goal with 15 minutes to go as the spoils were shared.
In the Scottish Championship, Alex Samuel started for Morton in their 1-0 defeat at Queen of the South.
