Maddy Murray | We showed the quality we possess
Maddy Murray felt Swansea City Women demonstrated their quality as they returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Cardiff Met.
The Swans bounced back from two consecutive defeats with an impressive performance, scoring twice in the second half to claim all three points and keep a clean sheet.
Aimee Deacon opened the scoring with a calm finish before Chloe Chivers netted her sixth of the season eight minutes later to secure the victory over the Archers.
Murray was delighted with the response from the team and believes the result will provide a welcome confidence boost heading into this week's South Wales derby clash with Cardiff City.
“Obviously, coming off the back of two losses, we needed to show ourselves, and I think we really did that with the performance that we put out,” said Murray.
“I think we retained possession well, and we could have had at least three or four more goals, but it was nice to get a win, and I think it will really help the girls going into next week.”
Murray also highlighted the importance of the team's mentality and determination in the attacking third, with encouragement from head coach Yzzy Taylor helping the players produce the composure to make the most of their opportunities.
“She [head coach Yzzy Taylor] was just reinforcing the fact that we are good enough to win this game and that we have got those chances in us and the ability to take them. I think we just needed that extra push at the end to follow through," added Murray.
“If someone does have a shot or get in a cross, then make sure someone’s looking to get on the end of it, and I think we did that a lot more in the second half. To get those two goals early on really helped us settle back into the game. It was a good performance.
“I think the defence did well, and switching the ball was really good. We managed to open them up more in the second half and find the wingers.
“Obviously, keeping a clean sheet when we haven’t done that in a couple of games is good for everyone all round,” she added.
The afternoon also marked another important milestone in Murray’s return from a foot injury, as the midfielder completed her first full 90 minutes of the season. After spending time on the sidelines at the start of the campaign, she was pleased to get back to playing a full match and continue building her fitness.
“It’s been a hard couple of months being out, so it’s really nice to start getting minutes again, getting back out on the pitch and finding my feet. To play here against Met and get some minutes under my feet is really good," she said.
“It’s obviously really good that we’ve had a win now, coming off the back of two losses. I think this one was important for us.
“The south Wales derby is always something that both teams are aiming to come away with a win from. We beat them in the first game of the season, and I think we aim to do that again.
“We performed really well against them last time, and as long as we do that, I think we can come away with all three points again.”
