Mael looks ahead

16th January

Mael Davies is looking to make the right-back slot his own after getting his first start in Premier League 2 for Swansea City Under-23s.

The 19-year-old played the full 90 minutes as the young Swans were held to a 3-3 draw by Derby County at St George’s Park on Monday.

Davies’ appearances this season have all come in cup competitions with Tyler Reid featuring regularly at right-back in Premier League 2.

But following Reid’s loan switch to Newport County, Davies is looking to make his mark in Premier League 2.

“Now that Tyler’s gone out on loan, it was nice to fill his shoes against Derby,” Davies said.

“I’ve been patient so far but I’m focusing on performing well every week and trying to keep my place in the team.

“I think I did quite well against Derby but at the end of the day we drew, which was quite disappointing.”

The under-23s were on course for a fifth consecutive league victory taking a 3-1 lead in the second half, only for the Rams to score twice in the final quarter of an hour and salvage a point.

And Davies says the players are focused on responding with back-to-back games in the Premier League Cup against Burnley and Colchester United next week.

“It was frustrating to draw, especially with the way we ended the game after being 3-1 up and comfortable,” he added. “We were very scrappy in the last 20 minutes and that’s not like us.

“It’s not a loss, it’s another point on the board, but we should have had all three.

“I think we’re all a bit gutted, but are looking to trying to get three points against Burnley next week.”
