Matt Gill expects Swansea City to be ready and raring to go when they kick-off their Championship campaign against Rotherham United.

The Swans face Charlton this weekend in their final pre-season friendly before the season gets under way on July 30 with that trip to take on the newly-promoted Millers.

Russell Martin’s side have faced Haverfordwest, Colchester, Forest Green Rovers, Plymouth Argyle and Bristol Rovers so far in pre-season.

While they also got in a good week of work at Pennyhill Park in Surrey.

The players have put in plenty of work, with a number of days including double sessions, and assistant head coach Gill is sure that will stand them in good stead for the campaign to come.

“Everyone is very excited already, and you can sense that. That is what pre-season is about, you are building yourself up with that first game in mind,” he said.

“We want to be in the best possible shape we can, and I have to say the players have worked tremendously hard.

“We have still got a little way to go, and we will probably taper things down a little over the next two weeks.

“The lads have given it everything they have got, I am sure they will be ready and raring to go.”

Gill also praised new signing Nathan Wood for the diligence he has shown in learning and adapting to a new style of play.

Unlike fellow new arrivals Matty Sorinola and Harry Darling, former Middlesbrough centre-half Wood has not played under head coach Martin and his staff before.

"We have been very impressed. Nathan has been like a sponge since he's come in, desperate for the information, desperate to ask questions,” continued Gill.

“He's really willing to listen and improve.

"I think the game against Bristol Rovers showed that. He's really come on since he's been in, and it's exciting what can come from Nathan, he's certainly got all the attributes and he's desperate to learn."
