Matt Grimes | We've set a benchmark

Matt Grimes says Swansea City’s win over Cardiff City has set a benchmark for the rest of the season when it comes to effort and work-rate.

Ben Wilmot’s goal settled the 108th South Wales derby, the 19-year-old finding the net for the first time in his senior career.

It saw the Swans claim just a second win in eight league games, and a first at the Liberty in five attempts.

There was a notable bite to Swansea’s play without the ball in a performance that married style and substance amidst the predictable frenetic speed of a local derby.

Cardiff huddle

And captain Grimes has revealed how – in the post-match huddle of players and staff on the Liberty pitch – it was made clear that a standard has been set for the remainder of the campaign.

“In the huddle, you can probably guess what was said. We know that’s the benchmark for the rest of the season; that’s the absolute minimum requirement expected work-rate wise,” he said.

“We’re all so pleased. Games like that, you really want to win. It’s moments like these that you dream of.

“We’ll enjoy it but then we’ll focus on Wigan away.”
