Matthew Donohue

Matthew Donohue will be the man in charge when Swansea City travel to Rotherham United on the opening day of the Championship season this Saturday (3pm).

The Greater Manchester official began refereeing at the age of 14 and became an EFL assistant referee in 2014. Four years later, he was promoted to the National List of Referees and - after a successful first season in the Football League – he was added to the Select Group 2 list of officials at the end of the 2018-19 season.

His first Championship match was in August 2019, but he didn’t take charge of a Swans game until February 2020 – a 3-2 home defeat to Derby County.

Donohue has overseen a further four Swans matches. One of those was a clash with Saturday’s opponents, Rotherham, in November 2020. Ryan Bennett was the only Swans man to receive a booking, while it was a Matt Grimes goal which sealed the three points on home turf.

Last season, Donohue took charge of 34 matches – including a League One play-off semi-final – and handed out 138 yellow cards and eight reds.

On Saturday, Donohue will be assisted by Robert Hyde and Andrew Aylott. Will Finnie will be the fourth official
