Meet the opposition | Burnley
As Swansea City get set to face Burnley on Saturday afternoon, we take a closer look at the Clarets.
What’s their story?
Established in 1882, Burnley Football Club were one of the founding members of the Football League.
They have won two top-flight titles, with the first coming in 1921 after a remarkable 30-match unbeaten run, while their second arrived in 1960. They also lifted the FA Cup in 1914.
Burnley have now enjoyed six spells in the Premier League since the competition was formed in 1992, most recently returning to the top flight in 2025.
However, their latest stint lasted just one season, with the Clarets relegated in 2026 after finishing 19th.
They had previously returned to the Premier League as Championship champions in 2023, before also suffering relegation the following year.
How’s their form?
Burnley have endured a difficult start to the Championship campaign and remain without a win, collecting just three points from their opening six matches.
The Clarets were last in action in midweek, when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Wrexham at the Stōk Cae Ras.
Who’s the gaffer?
Nicky Hayen took charge of Burnley in July 2026, signing a three-year deal after a managerial career that has taken him from Belgium to the Cymru Premier and back to the top of Belgian football.
The Belgian enjoyed his biggest success with Club Brugge, initially taking charge as caretaker manager in March 2024. He quickly transformed the side’s fortunes, guiding Brugge to the Belgian championship before being handed the job on a permanent basis that summer.
Hayen has a strong connection to Wales, having been appointed manager of Haverfordwest County in December 2021. He became the first Belgian manager to work in the Cymru Premier, helping the Bluebirds secure their top-flight status before returning to his homeland six months later to take charge of Club Brugge’s Under-23 side.
Before moving into management, Hayen enjoyed a playing career spanning more than a decade, featuring for Sint-Truiden, RBC Roosendaal and Oud-Heverlee Leuven before becoming a player-coach at Dender EH. His time at Dender marked the start of a coaching career that has now led him to Turf Moor.
Who’s the captain?
Club captain Josh Cullen has been a key figure in Burnley’s rise since joining the Clarets in 2022, helping the club win the Championship title in his first season at Turf Moor.
The midfielder played 50 games during that campaign and was named both the Club Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year. He has since established himself as a leader in the side.
Cullen came through the West Ham academy after joining at the age of nine and spent 15 years with the Hammers, with loan spells at Bradford City, Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic providing valuable Football League experience. He helped Charlton win promotion to the Championship in 2019 before leaving West Ham for Anderlecht in 2020.
It was in Belgium that Cullen linked up with former Anderlecht boss Vincent Kompany, captaining the side during a two-year spell before moving to Burnley. The Republic of Ireland international made 44 Championship appearances in Burnley’s 2024-25 promotion campaign, contributing two goals and an assist.
Who are the key men?
Aaron Ramsey joined Burnley from Aston Villa in August 2023, signing a five-year deal.
The winger made his Premier League debut against boyhood club Villa shortly after arriving at Turf Moor, but a serious injury midway through the 2023-24 season disrupted his progress and limited his involvement the following campaign.
Ramsey came through Villa’s academy alongside his brother Jacob, signing his first professional contract in 2021. He also won the FA Youth Cup at club level, and the Under-19 European Championship with England, having represented his country at every level up to Under-20.
Loan spells with Cheltenham Town, Norwich City and Middlesbrough provided valuable senior experience, with Ramsey catching the eye in the Championship before earning his move to Burnley.
A recent arrival at Turf Moor, Jamie Vardy brings a wealth of experience to Burnley, joining the Clarets after a season in Serie A with Cremonese.
The 39-year-old striker is one of the most decorated forwards of the modern era, having scored 200 goals in 500 appearances for Leicester City and played a starring role in their remarkable 2015-16 Premier League title triumph.
Vardy also won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2019-20 after scoring 23 goals, while he earned 26 England caps during a career that has also taken him into the Champions League.
His route to the top was far from conventional. Released by Sheffield Wednesday as a teenager, Vardy worked his way through non-League football with Stocksbridge Park Steels, FC Halifax Town and Fleetwood Town before earning a £1 million move to Leicester in 2012.
