Meet the opposition | Derby County
As Swansea City get set to face Derby County on Saturday afternoon, we take a closer look at the Rams.
What’s their story?
Initially founded in 1884 as an offshoot of the Derbyshire County Cricket Club, the club is one of 12 founder members of the Football League and one of just 10 clubs who have never been relegated out of the Football League system.
The 1970s provided something of a heyday for the club. They won the top-flight title twice in that decade and reached the European Cup semi-finals. Their sole FA Cup win came in 1946.
In the entirety of their 140-year history, they have only been outside of the top two flights for six seasons in total, and they returned to the second tier by securing promotion from League One at the end of the 2023-24 season.
How’s their form?
The Rams have made a winless start to the 2026-27 Championship season. They were beaten by Charlton Athletic on the opening day before earning a 2-2 draw with Cardiff City last weekend.
Derby also fell at the first hurdle in the Carabao Cup, losing 2-1 to Lincoln City.
Who’s the gaffer?
John Eustace has been at the helm at Derby County since February 2025, when he left Blackburn Rovers to take charge at Pride Park.
A former Derby player, Eustace made more than 400 appearances during his playing career, including two spells with the Rams. He also represented Coventry City, Stoke City and Watford, with his playing career coming to an end at Derby in 2015.
He moved into management with Kidderminster Harriers before taking coaching roles at Queens Park Rangers and the Republic of Ireland. He then returned to the Championship as Birmingham City head coach in 2022, before taking charge of Blackburn in February 2024.
Eustace’s arrival at Derby proved pivotal as he guided the Rams to safety in the 2024-25 campaign, overseeing six wins and three draws from their final 14 league games. Derby then enjoyed a strong 2025-26 campaign, finishing eighth in the Championship with 20 victories.
Who’s the captain?
Lewis Travis is the current Derby captain after taking on the armband during his first season at Pride Park.
The 28-year-old midfielder joined the Rams from Blackburn Rovers in August 2025, signing a four-year contract and reuniting with former boss Eustace.
Travis made 30 appearances in his debut campaign, helping Derby stay in the play-off hunt until the final day. He had previously captained Blackburn and also spent part of the 2023-24 season on loan at Ipswich Town, helping them secure promotion to the Premier League.
A product of the Liverpool academy, Travis made his senior breakthrough at Blackburn and has built the majority of his career in the Championship.
Who are the key men?
Carlton Morris became Eustace’s first signing at Derby when he arrived from Luton Town in June 2025.
The experienced striker made an explosive start to life at Pride Park, scoring 10 goals in his opening 15 appearances and establishing himself as one of the Championship’s leading scorers.
A knee injury then ruled Morris out for around three months, but he returned to add two more goals and finish the campaign as Derby’s top scorer with 12 goals.
Morris previously played a starring role in Luton’s promotion to the Premier League, scoring 20 Championship goals in 2022-23. He also netted 11 times in the Premier League the following season.
Sam Szmodics returned to Derby in the summer of 2026 for a second spell on loan, once again linking up with Eustace.
The Republic of Ireland international enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career under Eustace at Blackburn Rovers in 2023-24, finding the net 33 times in all competitions.
His form earned him a move to Ipswich Town, where he scored on his first Premier League start against Manchester City and finished the campaign with five goals in 36 appearances.
A product of the Colchester United academy, Szmodics has also played for Bristol City and Peterborough United, where he helped Posh win promotion to the Championship.
